Information on Hair Loss and Treatments

Hair loss is an emotionally devastating disorder affecting millions of men and women in the United States and all over the world. Hair loss can be caused by a number of conditions and it is often considered abnormal. However, a large number of individuals experience hair loss as part of the natural aging process, often by the time they reach 50 years of age.

The pattern of hair loss differs between males and females. In men, hair loss often beings at the forehead and on the top of the head then spreads toward the back. In women, hair loss often beings on the top of the head and is usually a thinning of the hair rather than complete baldness.

Hair loss can be caused by a number of factors, including

  • Genetics – the most common cause of hair loss
  • Autoimmune disease
  • Changes in hormone levels
  • Anemia
  • Medical treatments, including chemotherapy
  • Crash diets
  • Scalp infection

The first step for patients who are experiencing hair loss is to visit a hair restoration specialist who can diagnose the cause of the disorder by examining the hair and skin or conducting a number of tests.

Although, most hair loss disorders are a permanent condition, recent developments of advanced hair loss products and/or hair restoration treatments are making it possible for individuals to recover. A number of effective treatments include: tropical solutions, hair reconstruction, such as laser treatments, or hair transplant surgery.

In fact, hair transplants, which have developed dramatically over the last several years, have been quite effective in treating hair loss. During hair transplant surgery, healthy hair is harvested from one area of the scalp and placed into the bald and/or thin areas. When performed by an experienced surgeon, hair transplant surgery can lead to remarkable, natural-looking results and has, in fact, helped many individuals recover from hair loss helping them appear younger.

In fact, many hair loss patients experience a huge boost in self-esteem and often continue to improve their aesthetics by undergoing additional plastic surgery procedures, including facelift, eyelid surgery, rhinoplasty and/or anti-aging treatments such as: laser skin resurfacing, laser scar therapy and Botox injections.
