Remove Hair Using Laser Technology

Laser hair removal has become extremely popular in the United States, with more than a half a million treatments performed each year. During the procedure, an intense laser beam of light is directed toward the area of skin where the unwanted hair is located. The laser beam destroys the hair follicles while preserving the surrounding skin.

Advantages of Laser Hair Removal

Patients gravitate to this procedure because it has advantages over other hair removal techniques. Waxing and shaving are the most widely used techniques to remove unwanted hair, but hair can start to grow back in just a few days after these techniques are applied. Some oral medications are available, but these medications are not suitable for everyone. Laser hair removal is not a permanent procedure, but it can last up to 15 weeks before the hair growth returns. This treatment cycle is ideal for certain areas of the body, such as the upper lip for women, arms and legs. Chin hair can also be removed, but this typically requires more treatment sessions than for upper-lip hair.

Candidates for Laser Hair Removal

A visit with a qualified physician or nurse can help determine if you are an ideal candidate for laser hair removal. The best candidates are light skinned with dark hair. Coarse hair is the easiest to remove. If you decide to have the treatment, typically there is little discomfort. Skin numbing cream may be used before the procedure and normally healing begins in one to two days. After the procedure, tanning and other activities that expose the skin to excessive hear, such as hot tub use, should be avoided.
