Information on Labiaplasty Surgery

Labiaplasty is a highly specialized procedure requiring the specific skills and expertise of a well-trained plastic surgeon. Labiaplasty is used to enhance and reduce the size of the inner and/or outer vaginal lips, also known as labia minora and labia majora.

Most women undergo the procedure for a number of reasons, including vaginal appearance, to eliminate physical discomfort or enhance sexual satisfaction. In fact, many women who have enlarged or misshaped vaginal lips often experience physical pain during exercise, intercourse, wearing tight clothes or even sitting down for an extended period of time. Vaginal lip enlargement can be caused by a number of factors, including:

  • genetics
  • aging
  • childbirth
  • injury
  • sexual intercourse

In addition, women who suffer from enlarged labia minora and/or labia majora may become extremely self-conscious over the aesthetics of their vagina.

Labiaplasty is generally an outpatient procedure that lasts anywhere between two to four hours. The patient is given local anesthesia to help prevent any pain or discomfort during surgery. Next, incisions are made along the lips of the vagina and excess tissue is removed using a number of surgical tools. Liposuction may also be performed to reduce the size of labia majora. Some surgeons may also use a carbon dioxide (CO2) laser to smooth out any skin irregularities and promote new skin growth, similar to laser skin resurfacing of the face. The laser may also help further tighten the vaginal opening.

Recovery may last several weeks and common side effects include, bruising, swelling, tenderness and some bleeding. Women who undergo labiaplasty will be asked to limit activity and sexual intercourse for at least four weeks. Prescription painkillers and antibiotics are often prescribed to help manage pain and avoid possible infections.

Labiaplasty is a complex surgical procedure that is associated with a number of risks, including infections, excessive bleeding, scar tissue, pain and hematoma. This is why it is extremely important to locate a skilled plastic surgeon who has years of experience and specializes in labiaplasty and other vaginal rejuvenation procedures.

Most Houston vaginoplasty surgeons also specialize in cosmetic surgery procedures of the breasts for both men and women, including breast augmentation, breast lift and treatment for gynecomastia, which is known as male breast reduction.
